Konjunktiv 2: The German Subjunctive Mood

In one sentence

Konjunktiv 2 expresses politeness, wishes, and hypothetical situations in German. Form it with würde + infinitive for most verbs, or use special forms: hätte (would have), wäre (would be), könnte (could), müsste (would have to), and sollte (should).

Konjunktiv 2 is the subjunctive mood you need for everyday polite German and for talking about things that are not real or not yet true. Unlike the indicative mood that states facts, Konjunktiv 2 softens requests, expresses wishes, and describes conditions contrary to reality.

For most verbs in the present, use würde plus the infinitive: ich würde gehen, du würdest sagen, wir würden kaufen. This construction is simple and works in almost every context. However, the verbs haben and sein have their own dedicated forms: hätte and wäre. These are so common that German speakers rarely say würde haben or würde sein.

Modal verbs also have distinct Konjunktiv 2 forms that you will hear constantly: können becomes könnte, müssen becomes müsste, and sollen becomes sollte. These forms are essential for polite requests and suggestions. When you want to ask someone politely, say Könnten Sie…? instead of the direct Können Sie…? When giving advice, use sollte: Du solltest mehr schlafen.

Hypothetical conditions typically start with Wenn and pair a Konjunktiv 2 verb in the if-clause with würde or another Konjunktiv 2 form in the main clause: Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich kommen. This structure signals that the condition is not currently true. Konjunktiv 2 also appears in polite phrases like Ich hätte gern… when ordering or requesting something, making your German sound courteous and natural.

FAQ

When do I use würde instead of the simple Konjunktiv 2 form?

Use würde + infinitive for most verbs in everyday speech. Only haben, sein, and the modal verbs have commonly used simple forms: hätte, wäre, könnte, müsste, sollte. Other verbs technically have Konjunktiv 2 forms, but they sound old-fashioned, so stick with würde.

How is Konjunktiv 2 different from Konjunktiv 1?

Konjunktiv 2 expresses hypothetical, unreal, or polite situations, while Konjunktiv 1 is used mainly for indirect speech in formal writing and news reports. In conversation, you will use Konjunktiv 2 far more often.

Can I use Konjunktiv 2 to talk about the past?

Yes. Combine hätte or wäre with a past participle: Wenn ich Zeit gehabt hätte, wäre ich gekommen (If I had had time, I would have come). This construction describes hypothetical situations in the past.
