Learn German for Russian Speakers

Russian speakers can start German at A1 and progress step by step to B1 — the level needed for migration, family reunification and citizenship. With daily vocabulary, grammar and speaking practice plus exam practice, that usually takes 6–12 months.

Where to start

For Russian speakers, German begins with the alphabet and pronunciation: it uses the Latin script and has special sounds — ä, ö, ü and ß.

Build sentences from day one and learn each noun together with its article (der/die/das), not on its own. Short, regular daily practice beats long, irregular sessions.

What will be easy and what will be hard

Russian speakers have an advantage: Russian already has cases and gender, so the idea of Akkusativ and Dativ and grammatical gender is familiar.

Three things tend to be hard: the articles der/die/das (and German gender often differs from Russian); word order (verb in second position, and at the end in subordinate clauses); and the fact that German capitalises every noun.

The path to migration and the exam

Most migration routes to Germany and Austria — family reunification, permanent residence and citizenship — require a B1 certificate. The usual path is A1 → A2 → B1.

You can take the B1 exam with Goethe, telc or ÖSD. If you are heading to Austria, ÖSD is the natural choice; in Germany telc is usually cheaper and more available at Volkshochschulen.
